Pregnant Tetyana With The Family - Refugees From Volnovakha, Donetsk Region ‘’War Diary’’ of ‘’Giving Joy’’ Foundation. Part 3.

26 April 2022

03.25.22 We’re talking to Tatyana in shelter in the sports complex ‘’Yantarny’’. She’s pregnant:, it’s clear that one more Ukrainian is going to be born soon.Tatyana with her husband and two children came to Dnipro. They’re trying to make at least some plans for the near future.

It’s unusual to see a very pregnant woman in the shelter. But it’s one more stereotype which we overcame and faced the reality now.

Tatyana’s words:

‘’We’re from Krasnaya Polyana village in Volnovakha, Donetsk region.

Volnovakha and Mariupol were shot on February 24th. We’re at home till the end of March.

We didn’t have a basement, but it’s dangerous to hide there.

The shell hit the village. The cemetery, school, hospital and shops were destroyed.

When the shells were flying a week ago, the youngest son was frightened. Danya had never heard such a sound and was very scared. Sasha, the daughter, pupil of the 4th form, was

also very frightened.

We escaped on March 9th to Kiev, the acquaintance from Krasnaya Polyana gave us shelter.

Then we had to move, and turned out to be here on March 21st.

We arrived at Dnipro by chance, we came and didn’t know where to stay. The volunteer met us at the station, we’re fed and given a telephone number of the head of this shelter. We

called and were accepted here.

There are four of us, husband and I, daughter and son, and my third child, son Misha, is going to be delivered soon. 9 months of pregnancy passed and I’m coming to the hospital on

Monday.

We keep in touch with neighbors and relatives, shootings are still going on. At first it was quiet, then they started again.Yesterday 4 blocks of flats were shot near our mother, there were victims. It isn't as horrible as in Volnovakha, where the city is completely destroyed. But

it’s not funny anyway.

I don’t know what is going to be next…We don’t understand where to move next’’...

*04.01.22 A healthy baby, the son Misha was born.

They still live in the shelter in the Sports complex ‘’Yantarny’’. But the family can’t stay in Dnipro for a long time, because mass evacuation from the East of Ukraine is going on. First of all they stay in Dnipro. Indeed, after a horrible tragedy at the railway station in Mariupol, more people started escaping from Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv region.

Collective settlements (shelters) have already been full. The local authorities ask people to get stronger in a couple of days and move further either to the region or to the West or to rent a flat by themselves. So, soon after the childbirth, the family has to make a difficult decision where to move further.

The interview was made by the Foundation volunteer - Olga Levchenko.
